Moon Supervisors updated on commissary plan
Posted: February 3, 2011
The Moon Supervisors received an update at their Feb. 2, public meeting on plans to construct a military commissary at the corner of University Boulevard and Business Loop I-376.
The Defense Commissary Agency is developing the site in cooperation with Allegheny County Economic Development, which presented the plan at the February meeting. The plan calls for the construction of a 43,000 square foot commissary, which J. Patrick Earley, manager of the ACED’s Development Division, described as a “military grocery store” that will serve the region’s population of active and retired military service members.
Although the federal government is not required to follow local zoning ordinances, project leads have worked with the Moon Township Planning Department throughout the process to include the Township’s perspective in the plan.
“The Township appreciates the efforts of Congressman Murphy, Senator Casey, and former Senator Specter for their commitment to locate this commissary in Moon,” said Adam McGurk,Moon Township planning director and assistant township manager. “This development will be an asset to a community that is home to two military bases and a neighbor to others in the area.”
