Annual Projects
Composting Program
The Moon Township Department of Public Works offers a Composting Program twice a year - during the spring and fall seasons. New regulations set by the Department of Environmental Protection forced the township to make a few changes, which were implemented during the spring 2007 program.
Moon Township residents may bring leaves and brush to the assigned drop-off location. Public Works employees will then load the leaves and take them to the park. Bush will be chipped by Public Works employees, stored at a given location and taken to the park at a later date. If residents provide their own container, residents may bring composted material and/or wood chips and load it themselves.
Township residents may also make arrangements to have compost delivered to their residence. There is a charge for this service. Residents may make arrangements by visiting the township office or contacting them at (412) 262-1700.
Litter Clean-Up
The Department of Public Works is also responsible for coordinating all litter clean-up and Adopt-A-Highway projects in Moon Township. Organizations wishing to participate in such programs must fill out an application and sign a release form. Upon approval, they will choose a date and the Public Works Department will provide gloves and orange vests. They will also remove the collected trash from the roadways being cleaned. For more information about this program, please contact the department.
Resurfacing Projects
While the Department of Public Works is not responsible for Moon Township’s Annual Road Paving Program, they do take care of any simple pothole or resurfacing projects that need attention throughout the year. A contract is awarded each year for the road paving program, but Public Works employees help make the process easier by filling in potholes and cracks before the roads are paved.
Road Kill
Another responsibility of the Department of Public Works is to properly dispose of any road kill found on Township, county and state roads located within Moon’s borders. Road kill is picked up by the Road Master, who is also Moon Township’s Game Warden.
Road Paving
Summer Road Program Slated
The Moon Township Public Works Department will begin preparations soon for its 2010 road paving program. At its March meeting, the Board of Supervisors voted to hire Youngblood Paving of Wampum, Pa. to pave stretches of the following roads this summer:
- Becks Run Road
- Oak Drive
- Juniper Drive
- Beacon Hill Drive
- Brodhill Farms Road
- Dover Drive
- Winwood Drive
- Market Place Boulevard
- Corporate Center Drive
- Serendipity Drive
- Locust Drive
- Turnwood Lane
Signs
When it comes to signage throughout Moon Township, the Public Works Department is responsible for ordering and posting street signs, Adopt-a-Highway signs, speed limit signs and several others.
The Township is currently in the process of replacing all street signs so that the meet the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation regulations.
Street Sweeping
Among the Department of Public Works’ fleet of vehicles is a street sweeper truck. Each spring, Public Works Department employees sweep the cinders and other winter remnants from all Township-owned roads.
Township Facilities
The Department of Public Works employs one person who is responsible for basic maintenance issues in all Township-owned buildings. In addition, Public Works employees also take part in a number of construction projects within Township-owned facilities, saving taxpayers thousands of dollars annually. Most recently, the Public Works department constructed a sidewalk along Beaver Grade Road, adjacent to the Municipal Building and the Public Safety Building. During the 2007 winter months, members of the Public Works crew assisted significantly in the construction of MCA-TV’s new sets by tearing down old walls, painting a green screen and building windows, which can easily be moved around the set.
Vehicle Maintenance
Vehicle maintenance is another responsibility of the Public Works Department that saves Moon Township thousands of dollars annually. Employees of the Public Works Department perform routine and specialized maintenance work on police department vehicles, Township-owned trucks and cars and vehicles used for road work and other construction projects.
Yard Waste and Leaf Drop-Off Site Programs
In the fall, the Moon Township’s Public Works Department offers a Yard Waste Program and Leaf Drop-Off Site Program beginning the week of October 1. The curbside brush and tree limb clean-up program takes place Monday through Friday between October 1 and October 31. Curbside pick-up will follow residents’ rubbish pick-up schedule.
Residents are asked to keep the following regulations in mind for this program:
- Brush should not exceed six feet in length.
- Brush should not have a diameter of more than four inches.
- Brush should not be bundled or tied.
- Brush should be at the curb line by 8 a.m. on the day of pick-up.
- Any brush or tree limbs that are not at the curb line will not be picked up.
- Public Works employees are not permitted to pick up leaves.
Winter Weather Regulations
Because snowfall can occur at any time, residents are asked to keep in mind the following regulations when it comes to road maintenance so that Public Works employees can maintain roads with limited difficulty:
- Do not park vehicles on Township-owned roads between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. This allows crews to maintain roads during winter weather conditions and will keep roads clear for emergency service vehicles.
- Do not plow or shovel snow from driveways or sidewalks onto roadways.
- Remove portable basketball hoops from public roadways, right-of-ways and cul-de-sacs as they routinely interfere with plowing and winter road maintenance.
